Both sad and happy. We started the show with the playlist from my first ever show at UMD. Songs 1-15 were from my beginning times on WMUC. Fond stuff. "Beat Control" by Tilly and the Wall was the first song I ever played on the radio.<br />
<br />
I had also had an outstandingly bad week the week before this show, and to commemorate it with song, the last half of the show was really depressing. <br />
<br />
Then we ended it on "Reelin' in the Years," a song I had been trying to get a copy of for ages. <br />

We sat really far away. Lots of Ben Folds and Weezer on the show today.<br />
<br />
This was also the day where Tevis and I sang "Topologize" (math version of "Apologize" by OneRepublic) on the radio. Good day.<br />
<br />
"Add It Up" was one of my favorite songs of this time of year. I edited it and played it at the end. We closed with the theme song to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" in honor of the "It's Always Sunny" party I was throwing May 1st. Oh college.<br />

Final Fantasy's cover of "Peach, Plum, Pear" by Joanna Newsom, a suggestion from my friend Carrie.<br />
<br />
I played a bunch of songs requested from my friend Greg, including the Bob Dylan, Usher, and Prince songs below.<br />
<br />
"Warrior" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs may or may not have been requested by my sister, but I will associate that song with her forever.<br />

It's kind of thing of mine to have a blog, write all the posts except the last few and just stop. My new goal is to actually finish this one.<br />
<br />
The night before this show I went out to a birthday party for Jenn from Wye Oak at the Golden West Cafe in Baltimore. It was pretty cool. Friend of the band Mickey Free performed along with a few other acts for the birthday girl. The party was pretty fun, there was a giant moose head, beer, a guy with a tattoo of Talking Heads lyrics ("There's a city in my mind" if you were wondering), and decently good times. I played the Mickey Free remix of "That I Do" by Wye Oak in honor of the event. <br />
<br />
Darwin Deez's "Radar Detector" was a solid part of my playlist this time of year. It's cute and bouncy. <br />
<br />
The Dirty Projectors' "Two Doves" was played with Nico's "These Days" because I had recently found out "Two Doves" contained a few lyrical references to "These Days", a classic Jackson Browne song I've known since I was very little. (He wrote that song when he was in high school. Deep stuff. My mom's a big Jackson Browne fan. We named our dog after him.) <br />
<br />
Mates of State's cover of Girls' "Laura" was a really good one during this time of year too. I like the cover way better.<br />

Welcome to my musical musings.<br /><br />The Blow is awesome, and I think I heard this song "Hey Boy" on my friends and radio neighbors' show Victory Sweater a few month back. Good stuff.<br /><br />I'm From Barcelona's "Treehouse" is adorable. Nada Surf covering "If You Leave" and You Say Party! We Say Die! covering R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming," which is one of my favorite R.E.M. tunes.<br /><br />"There Goes My Love" was probably an iPod commercial song and "Bye Bye Bye" was on <span style="font-style: italic;">Chuck</span>. I love television and music. Pavement's "Gold Soundz" was for my sister, who loves that song and is always surprised when I like it too.<br /><br />Oh snap, Janis Joplin. When I was way little (it came out when I was 6), I used to love the Faith Hill version of this song. Now that I'm older and know the Janis Joplin version, I like it a lot. I didn't actually know that Janis Joplin's version was a cover as well. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piece_of_My_Heart">Thanks Wikipedia. </a><br /><br />The next three were all requests from my friend Lilly. My favorite of these tracks was Ha Ha Tonka's "Close Every Valve To Your Bleeding Heart" which is fantastic for times when you are down. It has incredible <a href="http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858783549/1/DESC/">lyrics</a> too. Here are some of my favorites:<br /><blockquote><br />Thick skinned, hard headed, better off<br />you're closing every valve to your bleeding heart<br />Does it hurt too much?<br />Are you just fed up?<br />Or is it something else entirely?<br /><br />When I ask you why<br />you reply the death of hope hit you hard too<br /><br />Only Dostoevsky could kill off a pair like us.<br /><br /></blockquote>Holy cow. Just listen to the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0txJ9pOz3D0">song</a>.<br /><br />Kate Nash's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87KfXG5KRZ8">"Do Wah Doo"</a> uses the word "bitch" in such an adorable way.<br /><br />Next a mini science themed set of We Are Scientists, Dandy Warhols, and Guided by Voices.<br /><br />I had the opportunity to attend the Florence + The Machine concert with The Temper Trap the Tuesday before this show. Florence Welch, the lead singer with Florence + The Machine, drunkenly sang the Etta James song "Something's Got A Hold On Me" to her now manager in a bathroom. I love Etta James, so that was a cool piece of trivia. Then we played "I'm Not Calling You A Liar" a song that appears to be about taking someone for who they are without considering their baggage or their past.<br /><br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td><br /></td><td>The Blow</td><td>Hey Boy</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td><br /></td><td>I'm From Barcelona</td><td>Treehouse</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td><br /></td><td>Nada Surf</td><td>If You Leave (OMD cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td><br /></td><td>You Say Party! Welcome back to another installment of me rambling on about the music I like.<br /><br />I found out that Regina Spektor had done a John Lennon cover and I had to hear it. And of course it was amazing.<br /><br />We played some Tally Hall who I had seen a week before, and then some new Frightened Rabbit "Skip The Youth", which is very good, and has an intriguing intro. I was seeing Florence + The Machine the next Tuesday and played some "Hurricane Drunk," which I didn't like initially but now really enjoy. Daniel Zott's "Living A Lie" was on <span style="font-style: italic;">Chuck</span> in early March.<br /><br />Right about this time of early April, I was obsessed with Joanna Newsom's "Good Intentions Paving Company." It's an elegantly and intricately constructed song.<br /><br /><blockquote>"How I said to you, 'honey, just open your heart', when I've got trouble even opening a honey jar"</blockquote><br />That's just a half stanza. The whole song is full of excellence. Lyrics <a href="http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858815713/1/DESC/">here</a>.<br /><br />Also Joanna Newsom is dating Andy Samberg of Saturday Night Live fame. So we played some music by The Lonely Island right afterward.<br /><br />Fun fact: The song I played by Washington is called "Teenage Fury." For some reason, my computer switched the titles of that song and her song "Halloween."<br /><br />More awesome Fanfarlo. Cyndi Lauper retro jam. Yello's "Oh Yeah" from <span style="font-style: italic;">Ferris Bueller's Day Off </span>and <span style="font-style: italic;">It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia</span>, better known as "Day Bow Bow". The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q7FFjUpVLg">video</a> is so trippy.<br /><br />Then some old favorites with "The Frug" and "Karma Police." :)<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>Regina Spektor</td><td>Real Love (John Lennon cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Tally Hall</td><td>Taken For A Ride</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>Frightened Rabbit</td><td>Skip The Youth</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>Florence + The Machine</td><td>Hurricane Drunk</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>Daniel Zott</td><td>Living A Lie</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Joanna Newsom</td><td>Good Intentions Paving Company</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>Lonely Island</td><td>On A Boat</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>Angus and Julia Stone</td><td>Big Jet Plane</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>Washington</td><td>Teenage Fury<br /></td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td>The Antlers</td><td>Kettering</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td>Fanfarlo</td><td>Drowning Men</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td>The Shins</td><td>Pressed In A Book</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td>Cyndi Lauper </td><td>She Bop</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>14</td><td>Yello</td><td>Oh Yeah</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>15</td><td>Cloud Cult</td><td>Chain Reaction</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>16</td><td>Paramore</td><td>The Only Exception</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>17</td><td>Rogue Wave</td><td>Permalight</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>18</td><td>Muse</td><td>Micro Cuts</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>19</td><td>Rilo Kiley</td><td>The Frug</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>20</td><td>Radiohead</td><td>Karma Police</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>21</td><td>Black Diamond Boy</td><td>Brothers In Exile</td></tr></tbody></table>The Beat Frequencyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14617744509203473128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692488048934096114.post-71163550081559465122010-03-26T16:28:00.000-07:002010-05-17T16:53:40.310-07:00The Beat Frequency - March 26, 2010Hello again! Here's a recap of the songs of my life for this week.<br /><br />Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros' "40 Day Dream" is an incredible song. There's something about "bye bye, to the 'too good to be true' kind of love" being sung so jubilantly that makes my day. <br /><br />A lot of these songs, well at least a couple, were nods to my road trip to Kenosha, WI with my dad over spring break. The Strokes' "Hard To Explain" and Cold War Kids' "Audience" were two that I had the pleasure of listening to on the radio. "Hard To Explain" was one I heard from <a href="http://www.rock889.com/">http://www.rock889.com/</a> in Ohio and I wish I could give a shout out to that station in Ohio who played "Audience." I hadn't heard it before and it is a really good tune. <br /><br />Oh, and my dad loves Bob Dylan. So when I needed to sleep and he needed some tunes, I basically put my Bob Dylan collection on my iPod on shuffle. I had no idea before, but my dad's favorite is "Subterranean Homesick Blues" so that was for him. I love roadtrips.<br /><br />"Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" is a duet by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, two of my favorite singers of all-time, which I had recently rediscovered. "Baby you could never look me in the eye...."<br /><br />Fanfarlo is quite good, and "Finish Line" is one of my favorite songs of theirs. I'm just going to link you to their <a href="http://www.fanfarlo.com/lyrics">lyrics page</a>. It's that good.<br /><br />Also, this was the evening where I was still trying to decide whether or not to attend the Jukebox The Ghost/Tally Hall concert at Sonar in Baltimore, after I missed the one the night before in DC. (I ended up going. It was a great decision.) Tally Hall closed the show and made the audience sit on the floor and turn to the back where they performed their encore with the light of living room lamps, closing with a cover of Biz Markie's "Just A Friend." Jukebox The Ghost played before them, and their song "Hold It In" was my favorite. Also, they did a cover of New Order's "Temptation" which was stellar. I love that song.<br /><br />Also, I played "Soft As Chalk," which is my sister's favorite Joanna Newsom song off of <span style="font-style: italic;">Have One On Me</span>.<br /><br />Over spring break, SXSW was going on, and those torrents were stellar. Also over spring break, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Chilton">Alex Chilton</a> died, and in his memory we played some Big Star, Box Tops, and "Alex Chilton" by The Replacements.<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros</td><td>40 Day Dream</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Stars</td><td>Your Ex-Lover Is Dead</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>The Strokes</td><td>Hard To Explain</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>Cold War Kids</td><td>Audience</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>Bob Dylan</td><td>Subterranean Homesick Blues</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Dirty Projectors</td><td>Dark Eyes (Bob Dylan cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty</td><td>Stop Draggin' My Heart Around</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>She & Him</td><td>In The Sun</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>Fanfarlo</td><td>Finish Line</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td>Yeasayer</td><td>O.N.E.</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td>Neon Trees</td><td>Animal</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td>Laura Veirs</td><td>July Flame</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td>Jukebox The Ghost</td><td>Hold It In</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>14</td><td>The Magnetic Fields</td><td>No One Will Ever Love You</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>15</td><td>Fang Island</td><td>Daisy</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>16</td><td>Biz Markie</td><td>Just A Friend</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>17</td><td>Joanna Newsom</td><td>Soft As Chalk</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>18</td><td>Jonna Lee</td><td>My High</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>19</td><td>Antennas Up</td><td>Don't Wait Up</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>20</td><td>Timothy Nelson and the Infidels</td><td>Speak The Truth In Love</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>21</td><td>The Paint Movement</td><td>Faults</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>22</td><td>Big Star</td><td>September Gurls</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>23</td><td>Box Tops</td><td>The Letter</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>24</td><td>The Replacements</td><td>Alex Chilton</td></tr></tbody></table>The Beat Frequencyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14617744509203473128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692488048934096114.post-43704623015927769922010-03-22T07:42:00.000-07:002010-03-26T09:39:26.800-07:00The Beat Frequency - March 12, 2010Cake's "Love You Madly" is in <span style="font-style: italic;">Forgetting Sarah Marshall</span>, one of the funniest films I've ever seen. I watched it again with my roommate before spring break happened.<br /><br />Washington's "How To Tame Lions" is easily my favorite new track off of the SXSW torrents. You should listen to it. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBSqgCZWavc">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBSqgCZWavc</a>. To get this, and a ton more songs from this year's SXSW festival, check out the following site <a href="http://sites.google.com/site/sxswtorrent/">here</a>.<br /><br />Band of Horses' "I Go To The Barn Because I Like The" gets the award for most incomplete song title and it was also on the season finale of <span style="font-style: italic;">Psych </span>this past week. Broken Bell's "The High Road" is a new one from the collaboration between Danger Mouse and James Mercer from The Shins. We then played "Rules Don't Stop" by We Are Scientists, a new track from them, which is pretty catchy.<br /><br />We also had a lot of fun with the record player playing "We've Got The Beat" by The Go-Go's for absolutely no other reason than playing with the record player.<br /><br />PS22 doing "Lisztomania" was the best thing ever. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mZ1zV1l2KQ">Click here for the video.</a> Be prepared to think it is the most adorable thing ever. I want the director's job. Continuing with our Phoenix theme we played "If I Ever Feel Better" which has some fantastic lyrics in it. Next we had Yael Naim (you might remember her from "New Soul" which was in a lot of Mac commercials) doing a cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic", which I guiltily love (both versions actually).<br /><br />More music in there followed by the new song from OK Go, which has a sweet, sweet music video with a Rube Goldberg machine that took the team involved 4 months to make. It was worth it. Check out the video <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w">here</a>. It's even cool to watch silently.<br /><br />Also, I'd been on a binge of The Smiths this week, which was most of the reason for playing the She & Him cover of "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (featured in (500) Days of Summer) and "How Soon Is Now?" earlier.<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>MGMT</td><td>Flash Delirium</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Cake</td><td>Love You Madly</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>Washington</td><td>How To Tame Lions</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>Family of the Year</td><td>Chugjug</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>Band of Horses</td><td>I Go To The Barn Because I Like The</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Broken Bells</td><td>The High Road</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>We Are Scientists</td><td>Rules Don't Stop</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>Discovery</td><td>Slang Tang</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>The Smiths</td><td>How Soon Is Now?</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td>Will Smith</td><td>Gettin' Jiggy Wit It</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td>The Go-Go's</td><td>We've Got The Beat</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td>Prince</td><td>Kiss</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td>Of Montreal</td><td>We Were Born the Mutants Again with Leofling</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>14</td><td>Jarvis Cocker</td><td>Don't Let Him Waste Your Time</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>15</td><td>PS22 Chorus</td><td>Lisztomania (Phoenix cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>16</td><td>Phoenix</td><td>If I Ever Feel Better</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>17</td><td>Yael Naim</td><td>Toxic (Britney Spears cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>18</td><td>Fleet Foxes</td><td>Mykonos</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>19</td><td>TV on the Radio</td><td>DLZ</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>20</td><td>Madcon</td><td>Beggin'</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>21</td><td>Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton</td><td>Nothing and Nowhere</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>22</td><td>The Magnetic Fields</td><td>Nothing Matters When We're Dancing</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>23</td><td>Barenaked Ladies</td><td>I'll Be That Girl</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>24</td><td>Radiohead</td><td>High and Dry</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>25</td><td>Frou Frou</td><td>Psychobabble</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>26</td><td>No Doubt</td><td>Sunday Morning</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>27</td><td>OK Go</td><td>This Too Shall Pass</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>28</td><td>Bob Dylan</td><td>Mr. Tambourine Man</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>29</td><td>The Stone Roses</td><td>I Wanna Be Adored</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>30</td><td>She & Him</td><td>Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (The Smiths cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr></tbody></table>The Beat Frequencyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14617744509203473128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692488048934096114.post-84676469144767402222010-03-22T07:18:00.000-07:002010-03-22T07:42:29.799-07:00The Beat Frequency - March 5, 2010Hello readers! Another lovely post from your friend here at The Beat Frequency. Here's our playlist with explanations, if not vague ones, about why I played some of these songs on our radio show here at <a href="http://wmucradio.com/">WMUC</a>.<br /><br />I was talking with a friend about staying hungry or ambitious, and "Hungry Like The Wolf" popped immediately into my mind. Also, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg6bZSM48vU">this lovely Old Spice Commercial.</a> No, not <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE">this one</a>. (But it's good too.)<br /><br />Also, another friend of mine requested "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" which is a ridiculous Beatles tune, along with "Strawberry Fields Forever."<br /><br />We played The Kissaway Trail because they are opening for The Temper Trap and Florence + The Machine at their show that I'm seeing in April. (WHICH I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT)<br /><br />The Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandes tunes were covered by Norah Jones on an album I owned a long time ago. I needed to hear the originals.<br /><br />Bob Dylan is awesome. Enough said.<br /><br />Bruce's "Dancing In The Dark" was related to the hungry theme. Lyrical quote: "They say you gotta stay hungry. Hey baby, I'm just about starving tonight."<br /><br />"Debaser" is a great song. Shouting the lyrics makes my day.<br /><br />The Blow's "Parentheses" goes out to my sister on her 20th birthday, which was later the next week, because she showed it to me and I love it.<br /><br />Billy Joel's "Vienna" goes out to anyone who has ever been overwhelmed with trying too hard. "Dream on, but don't imagine they'll all come true." Kills me every time.<br /><br />"Ambitions" by Donkeyboy was a special request from my good friend who now lives in Norway. It was a good song too.<br /><br />Spoon's "Is Love Forever?" was part of <span style="font-style: italic;">Transference</span>, the album of theirs that I was reviewing for the station (and finally finished.) The review is <a href="http://128.8.198.151/wordpress/?p=107">here </a>at the <a href="http://128.8.198.151/wordpress/">WMUC music blog</a>.<br /><br />"Next Year" by the Foo Fighters was the theme song to the television show <span style="font-style: italic;">Ed </span>(2000-2004), where I first started listening to music as an integral part of television. Unfortunately, due to outrageous royalties, <span style="font-style: italic;">Ed</span> may never come out on DVD, which makes me terribly sad. Bowling alley lawyer? Come on, that's classic television. Also, it had the Mac guy in it, and Michael Ian Black. (If you don't know that I like cheesy television by now, you don't know me very well.)<br /><br />"Abel" by The National was played for the line "my mind is not right" which I had the pleasure to see screamed by the lead singer back in August at the Virgin Free Fest in Columbia, MD. <br /><br />Rogue Wave's "Good Morning" now has a special place in my brain after I heard it on the drive back from a roadtrip to Wisconsin at around 3am in North Eastern Ohio (on the radio! I know, I was excited too). The great folks at Ohio's <a href="http://www.rock889.com/">Alternation</a> played it, along with a few more tunes I'll share on the March 26th show. Anyway, I couldn't place the song until I got home, but it felt pretty cool to have played it earlier.<br /><br />And we closed out with a remix of the remix of the cover of "You Got The Love." Yeah, try to wrap your head around that.<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>Duran Duran</td><td>Hungry Like The Wolf</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Led Zeppelin</td><td>Misty Mountain Hop</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>The Beatles</td><td>You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>The Beatles</td><td>Strawberry Fields Forever</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>The Kissaway Trail</td><td>Beat Your Heartbeat</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Thao Nyguen</td><td>Tallymarks</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>Tom Waits</td><td>The Long Way Home</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>Townes Van Zandt</td><td>Be Here To Love Me</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>Bob Dylan</td><td>Don't Think Twice, It's Alright</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td>Bob Dylan</td><td>It Ain't Me</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td>Massive Attack</td><td>Dissolved Girl</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td>Air</td><td>Playground Love</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td>Bruce Springsteen</td><td>Dancing In The Dark</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>14</td><td>David Bowie</td><td>Life on Mars? </td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>15</td><td>Elliot Smith</td><td>Jealous Guy (John Lennon cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>16</td><td>Pixies</td><td>Debaser</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>17</td><td>The Blow</td><td>Parentheses</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>18</td><td>Billy Joel</td><td>Vienna</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>19</td><td>The Proclaimers</td><td>Over and Done With</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>20</td><td>Built To Spill</td><td>Distopian Dream Girl</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>21</td><td>CSS</td><td>Cannonball (The Breeders cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>22</td><td>Donkeyboy</td><td>Ambitions</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>23</td><td>Spoon</td><td>Is Love Forever?</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>24</td><td>Foo Fighters</td><td>Next Year</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>25</td><td>of Montreal</td><td>Cato As A Pun</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>26</td><td>Band of Horses</td><td>Our Swords</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>27</td><td>The National</td><td>Abel</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>28</td><td>Rogue Wave</td><td>Good Morning</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>29</td><td>Portishead</td><td>Sour Times</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>30</td><td>Florence + The Machine</td><td>You Got The Love (The Very Best Remix)</td></tr></tbody></table>The Beat Frequencyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14617744509203473128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692488048934096114.post-81333685145487332382010-02-27T13:37:00.000-08:002010-02-27T13:37:23.842-08:00The Beat Frequency - February 26, 2010Hello there!<br />
<br />
Welcome back to another edition of The Beat Frequency, College Park's own wild tribute to the phantasmagorical. That word just makes me think of the circus. <br />
<br />
Anyway, we started off the show with some new Joanna Newsom from her recently released <i>Have One on Me, </i>along with some new music from She & Him, The Swell Season and Alphabeat. We threw in "Particle Man" for fun.<br />
<br />
The Thievery Corporation track was a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw2HAD9A_rw">gorgeous song</a> that has fantastic <a href="http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/The-Time-We-Lost-Our-Way-lyrics-Thievery-Corporation/6C9ECFE039E232E34825711D0029857E">lyrics</a>. Look it up.<br />
<br />
My favorite song of the week was rediscovering "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" from Talking Heads. I forgot how much I love this song. <br />
<br />
"The less we say about it the better<br />
Make it up as we go along<br />
Feet on the ground<br />
Head in the sky<br />
It's okay. I know nothing's wrong" <br />
<br />
I'm actually just going to post lyrics from some of the remaining tracks instead of talking about them:<br />
<br />
"I'm a loser and I'm not what I appear to be" <br />
"Arrest this man, he talks in maths"<br />
"For a little while you'll be here, the only good part of me"<br />
"He's not perfect. He's my hero. Smashing the piano"<br />
<br />
Ok, but I have to talk about this one. "Make You Feel My Love" by Adele is what we played on the show today, but it's a Bob Dylan cover. When I was younger, I knew the Garth Brooks cover really well and it was one of my favorite songs. It's beautiful. It's the one song that I play on guitar really well. It's also the song I was attempting to play when I broke a guitar string today. And so it goes.<br />

<br />
haha, no, but it was my birthday on the 18th and we had a decent amount of celebratory music. Starting with "Birthday" by The Beatles. Of course. Kate Nash's "Skeleton Song" was also played because of the line "now I'm twenty-two." (which strangely, Kate Nash wasn't when I first heard her sing that song.) Another birthday track was "Older" from They Might Be Giants, played a bit later. <br />
<br />
A friend posted some lyrics to "Fool in the Rain" on Facebook and I remembered how much I love that song. My dad loves Led Zeppelin, so we used to listen to a lot of them when I was younger. Thanks family for liking good music. :)<br />
<br />
Yeasayer's "Sunrise" was used in a rap track by Childish Gambino, also known as Don Glover of <i>30 Rock</i> writing and <i>Community </i>fame (he plays Troy). He's hysterical. After listening to his rap over the track (which I'm fairly positive can't be played on the radio, pesky FCC) I fell in love with the Yeasayer original.<br />
<br />
One of my favorite tracks which I had the chance to share this week was the mashup of The Killers' "Smile Like You Mean It" and La Roux's "Bulletproof" ("Smile Like You're Bullet Proof"). Great songs, great mashup. Fanfarlo's "Harold T. Wilkens or How To Wait For A Very Long Time" is also an incredibly catchy new tune.<br />
<br />
<br />
We also played "Land Down Under" by Men At Work in remembrance of me being in Australia around this time last year, and also hearing it on the way to Cornerstone on my birthday. Also, "Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac made an appearance on my shuffle on my birthday and then made its way onto today's playlist. Enjoy.<br />

Today was our first show back after the blizzard which canceled February 4th's show. Everyone in College Park was getting some serious cabin fever. We played some <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru9e2rTHeuk">Leonard Nimoy </a>(yes, that's Spock) and a few awesome songs my sister told me about (Gold Motel's "Perfect in my Mind" is fantastic.) Frightened Rabbit's "Nothing Like You" was also on the list. You can check out the video <a href="http://stereogum.com/112311/new_frightened_rabbit_video_-_nothing_like_you/video/">here</a>.<br /><br />Steve Perry's "Strung Out" was featured in a recent <i>Psych </i>episode and Datarock's "Amarillion" was played in <i>Chuck</i>. Why yes, if you've figured nothing out from any of these blog entries, I get a lot of my new music from television shows.<br /><br />We also had a cabin fever section of the show featuring the Muppets, R.E.M. and Bon Jovi. My own personal snowed-in song was "Aside" by The Weakerthans. The line "and I'm losing all these stupid games that I swore I'd never play" was stuck in my head all week. TV on the Radio's cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Modern Romance" was new to me and I really enjoyed it.<br /><br />Oh yeah, and it was two days before <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbNqz7mj1aI">Anna Howard Shaw Day</a> so we played a few songs for all the lovers out there. Ok, so maybe they were just songs that mentioned love of various varieties. The Magnetic Fields' "The Book of Love" off of their <i>69 Love Songs</i> and Bloc Party's "This Modern Love" are fairly old favorites for me, and added with the newer "Cosmic Love" from Florence + the Machine started off the bit, with the classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division and then the epic "Elephant Love Medley" from <i>Moulin Rouge</i>.<br /><br />Oh, and then Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" because I was heading out to New Jersey after the show. I should've played "Atlantic City" but I like "Born to Run" better. <br /><br />Playlist for February 12, 2010:<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>Friday Mile</td><td>Lives of Strangers</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Eisley</td><td>Silver Springs</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>Gold Motel</td><td>Perfect In My Mind</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td>Leonard Nimoy</td><td>Highly Illogical</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>Patrick Watson</td><td>Overture</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td>Frightened Rabbit</td><td>Nothing Like You</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>Steve Perry</td><td>Strung Out</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td>The Weakerthans</td><td>Aside</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td>Datarock</td><td>Amarillion</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td>R.E.M. </td><td>It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td>Muppets</td><td>Cabin Fever</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td>Bon Jovi</td><td>Livin' on a Prayer</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td>Spoon</td><td>Written In Reverse</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>14</td><td>Buddy Holly</td><td>Everyday</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>15</td><td>TV On The Radio</td><td>Modern Romance (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover)</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>16</td><td>Fleetwood Mac</td><td>Go Your Own Way</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>17</td><td>Phoenix</td><td>If I Ever Feel Better</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>18</td><td>Flight of the Conchords</td><td>I'm Not Crying</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>19</td><td>John Mayer</td><td>Love Song For No One</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>20</td><td>Elliott Smith</td><td>Clementine</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>21</td><td>Death Cab for Cutie</td><td>I Was A Kaleidoscope</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>22</td><td>The Strokes</td><td>What Ever Happened?</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>23</td><td>of Montreal</td><td>Gronlandic Edit</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>24</td><td>Architecture in Helsinki</td><td>Like It or Not</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>25</td><td>Loney, Dear</td><td>I Was Only Going Out</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>26</td><td>Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin</td><td>Modern Mystery</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>27</td><td>The Magnetic Fields</td><td>The Book of Love</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>28</td><td>Bloc Party</td><td>This Modern Love</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>29</td><td>Florence + The Machine</td><td>Cosmic Love</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>30</td><td>Joy Division</td><td>Love Will Tear Us Apart</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>31</td><td>Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman</td><td>Elephant Love Medley</td><td><br /></td></tr><tr><td>32</td><td>Bruce Springsteen</td><td>Born To Run</td></tr></tbody></table>The Beat Frequencyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14617744509203473128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692488048934096114.post-3791480024009111392010-01-29T17:00:00.000-08:002010-02-10T19:33:07.356-08:00The Beat Frequency - January 29, 2010Why hello there!<br /><br />First show of the semester was fun. Favorite new song played?: Spoon's "Got Nuffin," one of my favorites off of their new album <i>Transference</i>. It was also showcased on TV's <i>Chuck</i>. Another great song was "Bulletproof" by La Roux, an excellent, danceable tune about not getting screwed over like you have in the past. An anthem for the ages, really. I fell in love with that song over winter break, but didn't get the chance to share it on the air.<br /><br />Oh yes! And You've Got The Love (The xx remix). Phenomenal song. Talking about giving up, but then getting through it with the power of love. The song is a cover of a cover of a Candi Stanton disco tune. Florence + The Machine did the latest cover, and then The xx gave their own vibe to the song. <br /><br />I'll add the playlist a bit later. Unfortunately the snowpocalypse has attacked the wmucradio.com server. Catch us this Friday (well maybe, if we're not snowed in) from noon - 2pm on <a href="http://wmucradio.com/">http://wmucradio.com</a>. These are strictly my opinion, and the order is fairly flexible. Feel free to comment on how atrocious this list is, or how I blatantly missed some crucial album that came out this year.<br /><br />1. Florence + The Machine - <span style="font-style: italic;">Lungs</span><br /><br />I first heard of Florence + The Machine back in July of 2008 when I found her "Kiss With A Fist" song on the music blogosphere. In face, I played it on one of my first few radio shows ever. It's different from the rest of the album, but just as good in its own respect. It seems to be about a mutually violent relationship where the couple just enjoys taking punches at each other and being crazy. Kind of reminds me of my parents. Mom sometimes throws hairbrushes; Dad calls it a love tap.<br /><br />However, her album <span style="font-style: italic;">Lungs </span>wasn't released until just last July. While in Australia, I found "Dog Days Are Over" and made a mental note to buy that album the next time I saw it. Unfortunately, that wasn't until November of this year, when one of Florence + the Machine's songs was pumped over the Best Buy airwaves and my brain remembered what it was meant to do. Essentially ever since, I've been playing Florence on repeat, over and over again.<br /><br />This is the kind of album where that works. "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" is a powerful and moving song about sacrifice, quite literally, and overcoming fear. Give it and essentially ever other song I'm about to mention a listen. I'm going to write a short novel here. "Howl" is another intense, almost primal, song about desire and passion and how that sometimes gets out of control. Check out the lyrics <a href="http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858774593/">here</a>. "Drumming Song" is another primal song of desire. This is Florence's strong point. Singing without inhibition, all in. It's glorious. "There's a drumming noise inside my head/That starts when you're around/I swear that you could hear it/It makes such an almighty sound." Ok, three more songs and I'll go onto the next one, I promise.<br /><br />It took me a little bit to warm up to "Cosmic Love" but once I did, I found it to be a magical, mysterious, tribal-like love song. The "you left me in the dark" part gets me every time.<br /><br />"My Boy Builds Coffins" is one of my sister's favorites off this album. It's a song about a man who builds coffins. And it's beautiful and intense.<br /><br />Ok, last one: "You've Got The Love." I originally liked The xx's remix version better, but I came back around to this. This song is a cover of house/gospel artist Candi Stanton's similarly named "You Got The Love." It's one of the most inspiration, uplifting songs I know; this is the song you want to hear when you are having a terrible day, when you feel like giving up, when all is falling apart.<br /><br />Florence Welch is my hero. She's an incredible singer with a powerful voice that pulls feelings out of emotional crevices you didn't know you had. If you can't tell already, it's highly recommended.<br /><br />2. Matt & Kim - Grand<br /><br />I first heard Matt & Kim this summer after being shown two of their videos by a coworker. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Yg-CgIwaHs">"Yea Yeah"</a> from their older <span style="font-style: italic;">Matt & Kim</span> and then "Daylight" from <span style="font-style: italic;">Grand</span>. Here's "Daylight":<br /><object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WgBeu3FVi60&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WgBeu3FVi60&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object><br /><br />*squee.* smiley drumming and refrigerators.<br /><br />And in yet another story of television influencing my music tastes, the new television show <span style="font-style: italic;">Community</span> featured their song "Good Ol' Fashioned Nightmare" and "Daylight." Soon after, "Oh hey, I know that song" was exclaimed. And then in an act of rebelling against the typical, the student entertainment group on campus brought Matt & Kim to our student union for a $5 concert. Deal!<br /><br />Oh yeah, and "Daylight" was in a Bacardi commercial. And the "Lessons Learned" video has Matt & Kim stripping in Times Square.<br /><br />If you like fun, dancing, drums or smiles, listen to Matt & Kim. "Cutdown", "Daylight", "Good Ol' Fashioned Nightmare", and "Lessons Learned" are definite favorites. "Cinders" and "Don't Slow Down" are catchy too.<br /><br />3. Ladyhawke - Ladyhawke<br /><br />This barely makes the 2009 list...it was technically released in September 2008, but I bought it in 2009. So there. It's my list; I do what I want. A lot of the singles were re-released in 2009 though...<br /><br />Ladyhawke made an album that I enjoy listening to almost all the time. And I got to see her and her band perform that album live at the 9:30 club.<br /><br />When I was in Australia, which is essentially right next door to Ladyhawke's (singer Pip Brown) native New Zealand, Ladyhawke was a pretty solid fixture in the club scene I frequented. This was awesome. "My Delirium" was everywhere. Everyone knew "Dusk Till Dawn." I felt so cool for having heard Ladyhawke before.<br /><br />But the music, it's so danceable and catchy. Screaming "bang, bang, bang on the wall" during "Dusk Till Dawn" is super fun. "Love Don't Live Here" got me through some interesting times. "Magic" was one of the first Ladyhawke songs I ever heard, and I still like it. "Paris Is Burning" too.<br /><br />"Back of the Van" with it's "you set me on, you set me on fire" line intently repeated speaks to me. I know I'm terrible at reviewing music, but you know that feeling you get when you just like something? I feel that feeling with this album.<br /><br />4. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix<br /><br />"It's 20 seconds to the last call, going hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey"<br /><br />Oh Phoenix, you and your adorable Engrish lyrics that don't really make sense but sound awesome...thank you for <span style="font-style: italic;">Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix</span>. The bright melodies of "1901" and "Listzomania" lit up my year. "1901" is one of those stories <a href="http://www.knoxroad.com/2009/02/23/new-phoenix-song-from-upcoming-album-wolfgang-amadeus/">where I heard a song</a> consciously, forgot about it, and then heard it again and thought it was the best thing that ever happened and found myself jotting lyrics down to Google when I got home, etc. I'm always curious to know if I would have liked these songs as much the second time if I hadn't heard it the first.<br /><br />I knew "Listzomania" before <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtRQsCgYmtc">this video</a> came out, but I started really, really liking it after watching that. "Rome" is a new favorite. "2000 years remain in a trash can" are just some simple, yet poetic lyrics. Others I love: "Lasso," "Girlfriend."<br /><br />5. The Temper Trap - Conditions<br />I'm only on 5? Geez, this list is long.<br /><br />I first heard of The Temper Trap while watching the movie<span style="font-style: italic;"> (500) Days of Summer</span> through their song "Sweet Disposition." Luckily for you, I don't review movies, because my ravings about that movie would be longer than my Florence review.<br /><br />Regardless, The Temper Trap's "Sweet Disposition" starts out with a smooth tenor then transitions to a more percussive transition into the solid chorus. But that lead up of "a moment, a love, a dream aloud, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs" is just the perfect way to build to that part of the song. I also like the lyrics in the first verse of "oh reckless abandon, like no one's watching you." I really think it's a sweet song and was used really well in <span style="font-style: italic;">(500) Days of Summer</span>.<br /><br />But wait, there's more! "Science of Fear" stirs the soul. It's almost unsettling. It gives off a mysterious vibe, and a closer look at the lyrics makes the listener think (Like what on earth does "watch the murder of your way of life" mean?). The "ooh ooh ooh"s in "Fader" are just super fun to sing. "Down River" has solid drums and I particularly like the lyrics of its first verse.<br /><br />Also, I got to see these guys perform at the CMJ Music Marathon this year and it was a great show.<br /><br />6. Metric - Fantasies<br /><br />Metric is just a great band. I listened to parts of <span style="font-style: italic;">Fantasies </span>back in April, but just bought the whole album this November. "Sick Muse," "Help, I'm Alive" and "Satellite Mind" were my favorites back in April, and currently I'm hooked on "Gimme Sympathy." Watch this incredible acoustic version:<br /><br /><object width="350" height="215"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EZEU41xdgDU&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EZEU41xdgDU&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="350" height="215"></embed></object><br /><br />It's just good stuff. I remember hearing that "Satellite Mind" was written after lead singer Emily Haines went to a funeral. Made me rethink the whole song.<br /><br />7. The xx - xx<br /><br />Ok, this came out of nowhere and maybe in a year I'll look back and say "what on earth was this doing on this list" but for now:<br /><br />The xx is really cool. I know pretty much nothing about them except that they are up and coming and from England and they were really hyped up at the CMJ Music Marathon this year. However, I hadn't really investigated them at the time, so I didn't really see them.<br /><br />But "Crystalised" is already my top played album on this laptop ("You've applied the pressure/<br />To have me crystalised") and I can't get enough of it. Something about the bass and how the singers have these hypnotizing voices and it creates this really sensual song about working out relationships, the pace at which things are progressing and expectations.<br /><br />Their music is minimalistic, but intriguing. "Heart Skipped A Beat" with it's "sometimes I still need you" line is just perfect. Leave it to a bunch of 20 year-olds to write an album of songs I can relate to. When the male and female leads combine forces, especially on "Crystalised," it creates a dynamic that's untouchable. Other strong tracks include "Islands" and "Basic Space."<br /><br />8. Imogen Heap - Ellipse<br /><br />I first heard "First Train Home" from <span style="font-style: italic;">Ellipse <span style="font-style: italic;"></span></span>back in July and really liked it. In September, I got the rest of the album and that brings us to number 8 on our list.<br /><br />I love Imogen Heap, but unfortunately I have a habit of loving half the tracks on her albums and feeling really apathetic toward the rest. It's about the same this time.<br /><br />"First Train Home," in typical Imogen fashion, has tinges of electronic music along with bounciness and well-crafted harmonies. "Bad Body Double" is one of my favorites of this album and the recording in the shower is quite cool and resounds with every girl who has looked in the mirror and felt like they didn't know who that person was. "The Fire" is nominated for a 2009 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "Aha!" is mystical and sounds like it could easily be in a Halloween movie.<br /><br />9. Regina Spektor - Far<br /><br />(Editor's Note: Ok, so looking back over this, <span style="font-style: italic;">Far</span> should be above <span style="font-style: italic;">Ellipse</span>, but I'm too tired to change it now.)<br /><br />Regina Spektor is one of my favorite musicians and her album <span style="font-style: italic;">Far </span>was really well done.<br /><br />I wasn't sure about the album when I had only heard "Blue Lips" and "Laughing With." It's not that they're bad songs; it just wasn't what I was looking for.<br /><br />"The Calculation" is the most adorable love song and it was what I was looking for. It almost feels like it should be in a kids movie. Cutest lyrics award:<br />So we made our own computer out of macaroni pieces<br />And it did our thinking while we lived our lives<br />It counted up our feelings<br />And divided them up even<br />And it called that calculation perfect love<br /><br />Other favorites: "Dance Anthem of the 80's", "Wallet", "Machine", "Eet"<br /><br />10. Discovery - LP<br /><br />Ra Ra Riot + Vampire Weekend = Discovery<br /><br />Take two bands I like, have members of each collaborate for a electro-new wave indie "thing", call it Discovery.<br /><br />I originally heard songs "Orange Shirt" and "Osaka Loop Line" before the album was officially released and enjoyed them. Lines like "Google yourself when you get home" make me want to debate what music is in our time and in our future. "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" features Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors and "Carby" features Ezra Koenig, also from Vampire Weekend and both are quite good. As long as you don't go in expecting a Vampire Weekend or Ra Ra Riot album, Discovery's work is a fun surprise.<br /><br />THE END<br /><br />Feel free to comment!The Beat Frequencyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14617744509203473128noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6692488048934096114.post-10904124856826365162009-12-08T20:44:00.000-08:002009-12-08T20:47:20.437-08:00The Beat Frequency: 12/8/09 (Best of the Year Show)Hey there readers!<br /><br />Today's show was our "Best of 2009 (ish) show!"<br /><br />The first 10 songs were from my not-so-organized list of best albums of the year, which we'll have more on in our next post.<br /><br />The others were other good songs either released this year or on albums released this year.<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td>*</td><td>Discovery</td><td>Orange Shirt</td><td>LP (#10)</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td><br /></td><td>Regina Spektor</td><td>The Calculation</td><td>Far (#9)</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td><br /></td><td>Imogen Heap</td><td>Bad Body Double</td><td>Ellipse (#8)</td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td><br /></td><td>The xx</td><td>Crystalised</td><td>xx (#7)</td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td><br /></td><td>Metric</td><td>Gimme Sympathy</td><td>Fantasies (#6)</td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td><br /></td><td>The Temper Trap</td><td>Sweet Disposition</td><td>Conditions (#5)</td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td>*</td><td>Phoenix</td><td>1901</td><td>Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (#4)</td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td><br /></td><td>Ladyhawke</td><td>My Delirium</td><td>Ladyhawke (#3)</td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td><br /></td><td>Matt & Kim</td><td>Daylight</td><td>Grand (#2)</td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td><br /></td><td>Florence + The Machine</td><td>Dog Days Are Over</td><td>Lungs (#1)</td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td><br /></td><td>Glee Cast</td><td>Don't Stop Believin'</td><td>Glee: The Music Vol. 1</td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td><br /></td><td>Mumm-ra</td><td>She's Got You High</td><td>(500) Days of Summer Soundtrack</td></tr><tr><td>13</td><td><br /></td><td>Tiesto</td><td>Feel It In My Bones (feat. Most of this playlist was all her.<br /><br />I played a lot of Explosions In The Sky before the show started because it's pretty.<br /><br />Things my sister introduced me to over break: Joanna Newsom's "Inflammatory Writ," The xx's "Crystalised," Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros's "Home," Garfunkel and Oates' "Worst Song Medley", Fanfarlo's "Ghosts", The Hood Internet, Cat Power's "Dreams" cover.<br /><br />Let us talk about the excellence of "Worst Song Medley" by Garfunkel and Oates.<br />Well, first, let's talk about <a href="http://www.garfunkelandoates.com/">Garfunkel and Oates</a>.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tnr8RKxf_g4/Sx8pBKQE3QI/AAAAAAAAACI/ZksWVMuG-Bo/s1600-h/garfunkelandoates.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tnr8RKxf_g4/Sx8pBKQE3QI/AAAAAAAAACI/ZksWVMuG-Bo/s320/garfunkelandoates.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413090377031015682" border="0" /></a>Kate Micucci (Stephanie Gooch, the ukulele player on <span style="font-style: italic;">Scrubs</span>) and Riki Lindhome (the flower girl on <span style="font-style: italic;">Pushing Daisies</span>) have a band called Garfunkel and Oates, which is incredible. Check out their website for more ridiculously funny songs.<br /><br />Anyway, their Worst Song Medley is hysterical to anyone who lived through the music of the nineties.<br /><br />These songs, in their glory, are featured in the tune:<br />1. "I Love You Always Forever" by Donna Lewis<br />2. "I Don't Want To Wait "by Paula Cole<br />3. "Too Close" by Next<br />4. "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer<br />5. "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd<br />6. "Barbie Girl" by Aqua<br />7. "Breakfast At Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something<br />8. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" by Michael Jackson<br />9. "Cotton Eyed Joe" by Rednex<br />10. "Rush, Rush" by Paula Abdul<br />11. "I'll Be Missing You" by Diddy<br />12. "Drops of Jupiter" by Train (last line) <br /><br />It's available on their website, and you can download it by clicking this link: <a href="http://www.garfunkelandoates.com/mp3/19/">http://www.garfunkelandoates.com/mp3/19/</a>. I know their song "True" essentially from <span style="font-style: italic;">The Wedding Singer</span>. I had no idea that was their actual name until this week's <span style="font-style: italic;">Modern Family</span> aired, with Edward Norton playing their fake bassist. That episode was ridiculous.<br /><br />We also had back to back doubles of Frightened Rabbit and Metric and another Florence + The Machine song. I played a set of the albums I'm reviewing this semester: The Grates, Oasis, Flight of the Conchords, and They Might Be Giants. We also had both mash-ups from that week's <span style="font-style: italic;">Glee</span>, and our listeners approved! Thanks folks!<br /><br /><table><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td><br /></td><td>Ra Ra Riot</td><td>Ghost Under Rocks</td><td>Passion Pit Mix</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td><br /></td><td>Matt & Kim</td><td>Good Ol' Fashioned Nightmare</td><td>Grand</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td><br /></td><td>The Cribs</td><td>Men's Needs</td><td>CSS Remix</td></tr><tr><td>4</td><td><br /></td><td>Snow Patrol</td><td>Set The Fire To The Third Bar</td><td>Eyes Open</td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td><br /></td><td>Jimmy Eat World</td><td>The Authority Song</td><td>Bleed American</td></tr><tr><td>6</td><td><br /></td><td>Sneaky Sound System</td><td>Pictures</td><td>(Digital Dog Poolside Dub)</td></tr><tr><td>7</td><td><br /></td><td>Two Hours Traffic</td><td>Territory</td><td>Territory</td></tr><tr><td>8</td><td><br /></td><td>The Grates</td><td>Two Kinds of Right</td><td>Teeth Lost, Hearts Won</td></tr><tr><td>9</td><td><br /></td><td>Oasis</td><td>The Shock of the Lightning</td><td>Dig Out Your Soul</td></tr><tr><td>10</td><td><br /></td><td>Flight of the Conchords</td><td>Hurt Feelings</td><td>I Told You I Was Freaky</td></tr><tr><td>11</td><td><br /></td><td>They Might Be Giants</td><td>Science Is Real</td><td>Here Comes Science</td></tr><tr><td>12</td><td><br /></td><td>Tiesto</td><td>Knock You Out (feat.
